The Fundamentals of Utilization of Ore-Based Metallics in the EAF
Much attention is being placed on EAF technology as a means of transitioning to lower-carbon-footprint steelmaking. However, the future of EAF technology is closely entwined with the selection of raw materials that we utilize to make the steel. Ore-based metallics (OBM) play a critical role in diluting scrap residual levels and enabling the recycle of steel scrap. With increased EAF OBM utilization, it becomes important to understand the fundamental impact of material chemistry, charging methods and other factors. This paper will decipher the impact of these factors from a fundamental perspective coupled with actual operating results.
