Scale-Up and Demonstration of a Carbon-Neutral Engineered Material to Displace Fossil Carbon in Electric Arc Furnace Steel Mills — Project Overview and Update
The Natural Resources Research Institute has been awarded a US$2.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office to explore a carbon-neutral engineered material to displace fossil carbon in electric arc furnaces. The project focuses on engineering the properties of biocarbon-based agglomerates to emulate the physical and chemical properties required of charge and injection carbon at the EAF. Implementation of this technology will provide EAF steelmakers with a carbon-neutral alternative to fossil fuel carbon sources with no reduction in performance or steel quality.
