Grid Forming Control Implementation in a STATCOM for Electrical Arc Furnace Compensation in a UK Steel Plant
A Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) for compensation of an electrical arc furnace has been installed at the steel manufacturing plant in Cardiff, UK. The purpose of the STATCOM is to improve the power quality in the connection point by compensating flicker, negative sequence current and harmonics generated by the electrical arc furnace. In addition, a Grid Forming Control functionality is implemented in the STATCOM control to further enhance the performance. This paper describes the features of the STATCOM with Grid Forming Control and shows the results from power quality measurements at the steel plant.
