Automatic Assessment of Electrical Load Impact and Strategies for Mitigation of Voltage Sags
A voltage sag is a short-duration reduction in rms voltage caused by electrical faults and load start-up events. The paper presents an overview of the traditional methods to characterize voltage sags and surveys occurrence rates provided in industry research reports and standards. The paper introduces techniques for automatic detection and quantification of electrical load impacted by voltage sags and automatic determination of load loss. Specific examples of voltage and current waveforms resulting in load change in LV and MV power systems are presented. The paper includes recommendations for voltage sag mitigation and methods for demonstrating and validating performance.
