Solving Transformer Supply Chain Issues With Key Transformer Maintenance Procedures and Tactics

The intent of this paper is to discuss transformer maintenance best practices including a discussion on some key components such as load tap changers, de-energized tap changers, bushings, and insulating liquids. Furthermore, best practices guidance will be provided regarding processing and testing. With the lead times of transformers increasing and increasing concerns related to transformer fires in mineral oil-filled transformers, a discussion regarding transformer life extension through retro-filling with synthetic fluids will be presented. The paper will also provide information on outage timeline predictability and constraints and the role of contingency planning prior to breaker opening.
