Operation of Reheating Furnace With 100% Green Hydrogen
This paper will describe the technical details on the conversion of a steel rolling mill reheating furnace to allow its operation with 100% green hydrogen and oxy-combustion. Reheating furnaces account for 75-80% of the natural gas consumption of mini-mills, and therefore of their CO2 emissions. The conversion of the reheating furnace to operate with 100% hydrogen is crucial to achieve the complete decarbonization of mini-mills. Sarralle has already built a reheating furnace prototype at scale in order to study different burner technologies and refractory materials as well as different steel grades under the new combustion atmospheres.
