A Comparison of Reheating Metals in Combustion Processes Using Natural Gas and Hydrogen Fuels
As the world looks to decarbonize, industrial processes will have to meet the challenges. One outcome for industrial decarbonization is changing to hydrogen as a fuel source from carbon-based fuels. However, hydrogen as an industrial fuel source in the metals industry is a large unknown, specifically its impact on heating and metallurgy. The heating characteristics of hydrogen on common metals will be investigated, such as plain carbon steel, aluminum and titanium. They will be compared to natural gas heating through experimental lab testing. The experiments will be conducted in a box furnace fired with high-velocity burners.
