Characterization of Inclusions During Ladle Refining of a Resulfurized Steel Grade (38MnSiVS5) Using Lollipop Samples
Inclusion, especially alumina, evolution is studied using a FactSage macro-based kinetic model including a vacuum degassing process and considering steel-slag-inclusion reactions. Multiple steel samples were taken during the process to study the evolution of chemical composition and morphology of inclusions using SEM-EDS analysis, focusing on the effect of the morphology of inclusions formed toward the end of steelmaking due to reoxidation. Since sulfur is a surface-active element, a strong effect of sulfur concentration is expected to affect the morphology of freshly formed inclusions. SEM analysis of electrolytic etched steel samples is used to carefully study the morphology of these inclusions.
