Thermodynamic Information and Evaporation Mechanism of Fe-M-C-S (M = As, Cu, Pb, Sb, Sn) Alloys for Controlling Tramp Elements in Steel
Tramp elements in steel should be controlled to produce high-quality steel grades in future CO2-lean ferrous processing. These elements are not easily removed when they dissolve in liquid iron and steel. One effective refining technique is based on evaporation enhanced by the interaction of C and S with the tramp elements. In the present study, a thermodynamic database of Fe-M-C-S systems is developed to provide activities of M in the liquid. Also, the removal of tramp elements in the process and their effect on solidification is predicted. Case studies will be presented by combining thermodynamic-kinetic modeling and experimental approaches.
