Methanation as a Low-Risk and Low-Emission Pathway for the Integrated DRI-ESF-BOF Process Route — Part 2
The DRI-ESF-BOF flowsheet is a promising low-emission pathway that can process significant amounts of scrap and Fe-bearing wastes while maintaining iron yield, product quality and slag valorization. This flowsheet enhances operational flexibility and business robustness, and provides a lower-risk transition strategy that retains existing steelmaking assets and well-proven practices. Part 1 considered carbon cycling through methanation of ESF and BOF offgases. In Part 2, the overall steelmaking emissions and economic performance related to the integrated DRI-ESF-BOF pathway using methanation and carbon cycling are presented.
