Techno-Economic and Life Cycle Assessment of DRI Production Through Hydrogen and Methane
NREL, in partnership with MS&T and ASU, is investigating iron ore reduction via mixed hydrogen and methane blends in a DOE-funded project. This presentation will cover the technoeconomic and life cycle assessment results of this work. The TEA and LCA are calculated using a process model coupled with a hydrogen optimization framework that determines the hourly operation of an on-site hydrogen electrolyzer under various targets (e.g., lowest cost or emission targets). Key results of the analysis identify break-even natural gas prices under different scenarios that enable partial hydrogen reduction to be economically competitive, and will be presented during this session.
