Integrating Physics-Based Modeling and Artificial Intelligence for Smart Manufacturing
The increase in computer storage capacity and technological advancement in sensor development have provided new opportunities for businesses to harness historical process data and uncover hidden relationships between process parameters and key performance indices. Seizing the opportunities offered by the revolution in computer technology in the 1980s, Prof. Brimacombe pioneered the applications of mathematical models and an expert system for understanding complex steelmaking phenomena. In this Brimacombe Memorial Lecture, I intend to continue the path laid out by Prof. Brimacombe by discussing the use of physics-based models and artificial intelligence for smart manufacturing in the steel industry.
