Carbon-Negative Ironmaking – Carbon Dioxide Removal and Fossil-Free Iron Units
Carbon dioxide removal is a nascent industry with significant venture and voluntary backing. Carbon removal is a critical aspect of closing the balance on net zero emissions, and can take many forms, exemplified by: bio-oil sequestration, direct air capture, enhanced rock weathering and ocean alkalinity enhancement. Bio-oil is a carbon-rich and medium-energy fluid that can be readily transported, either to a geologic sequestration site or to an ironmaking facility to be used as a reductant. The life cycle of a generic ironmaking route using bio-oil sequestration is summarized to contextualize “carbon-negative ironmaking” using bio-oil.
