Methanation as a Low-Risk, Low-Emission Pathway for the Integrated DRI-ESF-BOF Process Route — Part 1
Many producers are considering DRI processes as a decarbonization strategy. Little attention has been paid to the potential for reuse of carbonaceous gases when the DRI process is co-located with the ESF and BOF. Methanation of the CO-rich ESF and BOF offgases enables the carbon in these gases to be recycled back to the DRI as a reductant. Part 1 focuses on methanation to use hydrogen without modifying the operation of the DRI plant, reducing technical risk.
