Smelter – Green Steelmaking Using Low-Grade DRI
Hydrogen-based direct reduction is expected to become one of the main levers to reduce CO2 emissions in iron- and steelmaking. For melting and refining direct reduced iron, an EAF is the ideal aggregated if iron ore grade is high and the resulting slag amount in the EAF is reasonably low. But as most of the iron ores globally are of lower grade and beneficiation has its limits, a new type of furnace – the Smelter – is required. Details for this furnace and comparison to the EAF will be presented, highlighting the individual areas of application of both furnace types.
