What Will the Pellet of the Future Look Like?
The steel industry is in the middle of a massive transformation - a shift from blast furnaces to direct reduction and an increasing use of hydrogen in both furnace types is foreseen. Pelletizing itself is impacted by declining ore grades and increased utilization of residues, as well as the growing use of bio-carbon as solid fuel and organic binders to optimize iron content. Furthermore, first attempts have been made to replace oil or gas with hydrogen or use oxygen for process improvement. This has a tremendous influence on pellet quality requirement as well as the pelletizing process.
