Transforming the Integrated BF/BOF Plant to Green Steelmaking Using SMS Smart Carbon Concept
SMS is developing a novel circular carbon concept to decarbonize the BF/BOF route called EASyMelt. The acronym electrically assisted syngas smelter utilizes direct electrification through plasma technology to achieve ultralow coke rate operation of the smelter at around 100 kg/tHM. Utilization of syngas allows for an internal carbon recycling loop and excellent ore reduction without the reliance on coke, thus reducing CO2 emissions to less than half of today's conventional furnaces. The novel smelter operation mode is investigated and optimized numerically with the 2D BFinner in-house model to validate feasibility in terms of fluid dynamics and reduction kinetics.
