Options for Reducing CO2 for Iron and Steel Plants and Energy Efficiency Considerations
For reducing CO2 emissions, the steel industry is considering several options for modifying the existing flowsheet covering ironmaking and/or steelmaking processes based on green power, green hydrogen and biomass. Steel companies are also considering continuing their existing conventional blast furnace ironmaking route, but with the implementation of technologies such as carbon capture storage and usage. These initiatives, which require high CapEx investment and massive infrastructure development, are highly energy-intensive. Reduction in CO2 emissions will result in significant increase in energy consumption and operating cost; this means that the importance of energy efficiency will be considerably higher in future.
