Derisking of Iron and Steelmaking Decarbonization Projects
The pathway to decarbonization in iron- and steelmaking is very expensive and filled with a multitude of technical and commercial risks. These project risks complicate investment and execution strategies. There are three foundational principles to derisk green projects. First, leverage existing iron ore efficiencies. Second, understand the energy breakeven cost versus fossil fuels for a given project location. Lastly, apply technical solutions that can effectively transition from natural gas to hydrogen/green electricity. By applying these foundational principles, green projects are significantly derisked and have bankable cost savings versus direct pathways to hydrogen/green electrical operations.
