From Green Electron to Green Iron – Challenges and Opportunities
The challenge for the iron and steel industry is to reduce the CO2 emissions. A substantial substitution of steel production via recycling of scrap will fail due to lack of quantity and quality. Hydrogen is viable to produce iron substituting the BF with a reduced CO2 footprint via DRI processes. The future sites of ironmaking must fulfill the requirements of availability of energy, suitable iron ore resources and transport logistics. Challenges: To define, finance and realize ironmaking projects at locations with favorable energy generation. Opportunities: To provide enough green iron to steelmakers to substitute their BF ironmaking process.
