NO SHOW: Solution to a Chronic Problem With an Electromagnetic Brake of an Overhead Crane at Gerdau Açonorte
A steel mill overhead crane experienced frequent stops due to electromagnetic brake failures, impacting operations and jeopardizing safety. This study aimed to investigate and definitively solve this chronic problem using MASP, brainstorming, and The 5 Why's. Employing these methods pinpointed the root cause: the physical structure of Brake Type C, chosen in a 2016 alteration, was unsuitable for the installation environment, leading to coil dust accumulation. Subsequently, the brake was replaced with a suitable Brake Type K. Post-implementation, the brake functioned flawlessly, validating the solution. This underscores the significance of effective change management.
