Slack Detection Combined With Side-Pull Detection Improves Hoist Safety
A wire rope hoist on an overhead crane is a critical tool in steel production that requires scheduled service and inspections when properly used for vertical lifting. During operation, slack and side-pulling are common causes of equipment failures, including but not limited to premature failure of wire rope. Mill personnel do not often realize the impact that such practices can have on safety and reliability, techniques are available to detect and limit both the creation of a slack condition and a side-pull event.
