Using High-Tech Dual-Purpose Drives to Upgrade Steel Handling Motion System in Meltshops
The meltshop's material transfer system, responsible for moving molten steel, slag or scrap, faces reliability issues with vintage DC motors and contactors. Upgrading infrastructure is expensive. However, dual-purpose drives offer a cost-effective solution by reusing existing components. Each slag car wheel gets an individual PWM drive for precise control, ensuring speed, torque, current regulation and load sharing. The system also handles DC motor and brake circuits efficiently and provides redundancy, ensuring uninterrupted operation. This upgrade paves the way for potential AC motor replacements in the future, addressing long-standing concerns in the meltshop's material transfer system.
