Real-Time Optimized Torpedo Cars Schedule: Increasing Pig Iron Usage Efficiency
This paper presents an optimization framework for scheduling torpedo car trips at a steel works. There are many complex operational constraints, which resulted in an inefficient use of cars and bottlenecks in the process. This solution manages, with a holistic view of the problem, to quickly find an allocation that efficiently uses the resources, extending the useful life of the vehicles and decreasing pig iron waste. This solution integrates a few heuristic algorithms, one of which solves a specific sub-problem, and aims to be used in short-term planning.
