Evaluation of Combined DC/AC Inductive Heating of Steel Billet
Traditional reheat furnaces in a steel plant rely predominantly on fossil fuels. Induction heating emerges as a promising alternative. Research has been conducted on its application to steel billets with the primary objective of obtaining homogenized heating. Various researchers advocate to combine a DC field with AC induction field to improve heat penetration into steel billets. A model based on Maxwell equations was developed to investigate the use of static fields on the penetration depth in the workpiece. This model allows the technical feasibility of combining a DC with an AC inductive to improve heating of billets to be assessed.
