Automated Strand Quality Assessment Using Quality Indices in Continuous Casting

In continuous casting, determining the quality of slabs is an elaborate task often requiring either expensive equipment or cutting samples from slabs for investigation. An on-line tool providing an indication of the strand quality at the time of cutting can be used to take immediate action on the cut slab based on thermophysical simulation. Thereby measures like scarfing or reassigning products to contracts with lower quality constraints are only done when necessary. This paper presents current results of a slab quality indicator for analyzing corner cracks in continuous casting of steel slabs and improving the production process.
