Inclusion Engineering for Clogging-Free Continuous Casting of Case-Hardened Bearing Steels
Steel is by far the best-suited and most reliable material for bearing applications as it can sustain severe static and cyclic loads. The common need of all the bearing materials is to have superior internal cleanliness for a longer bearing life. One such bearing steel at JSW Salem had an issue of its tendency to clog while continuous casting and non-deformable inclusion levels were present. The reasons for clogging and this kind of inclusion are substantiated at each stage of process with process parameters. A detailed mass balance study coupled with thermodynamical aspects was done and industrial trials were taken.
