Smart Robotics Applied to Caster Operations

Among the different phases of the steel production, continuous casting one is one that still requires several manual operations dangerously close to the molten steel. This paper illustrates, through an industrial case study, how the right combination of the latest robotic technologies allows a full automatization of the casting operations, with great increase in safety, process and production efficiency. The project consists in a multi-robot system, each with several tools at its disposal, and has the goal of fully automatizing the critical operations connected to the caster, without requiring any manual intervention.
