Development of a System for Caster Segments Mileage Tracking at SSAB Iowa

It is a common practice in the steel industry to track the lives of segments based on tons of steel produced. For segments consisting of split rolls, some outer sections of the rolls may not contact the strand when casting slabs with narrow widths. Therefore, segments' service time may not be accurately represented by the tonnage alone. In this study, a caster mileage based tracking system has been developed and applied. In addition, casting events that may be critical to segments’ performance are being tracked. The Caster Segments Mileage Tracking System can be potentially used for predictive maintenance.
