BOF Advanced Slop Detection Warning and Mitigation Results at ArcelorMittal South Africa
Slopping in BOF operations continues to be a significant logistical and cost issue today. For these reasons ArcelorMittal decided to install Tenova’s Intelligent Slop Detection Systems (i SDS®) on each of their three vessels in Johannesburg, South Africa. i SDS uses novel vibration measurements from an accelerometer directly installed on the lance as well as predictive modeling to provide advanced warning alarms for the onset of slopping events. Mitigation actions can then be taken to eliminate or reduce the severity of the slopping event. This paper describes the system as well as the results of its implementation.
