The Effect of Arc Stability on EAF Performance
Most of the energy consumed at the EAF is delivered by an electric arc. Arc fluctuations produce electrical noise and instability known as harmonic distortion (THD). THD can be measured and used as a tool to optimize the EAF. Low harmonics are indicative of stable conditions with good arc stability. THD is recorded and used to quantify the relative efficiency of an EAF. This paper will present the evolution of arc stability and show examples of THD vs. power and other indicators of efficiency. In addition, the paper will show how to improve arc stability and efficiency.
