Nitrogen Control in Scrap-Based EAF Steelmaking
To decrease carbon emissions in the steel industry, it is necessary to increase the usage of EAF route, resulting in the increase of nitrogen-sensitive grades production in EAF. Typically, EAF steel contains between 70 and 120 ppm of nitrogen, however, the nitrogen content depends on the input materials and process conditions. Nevertheless, the lowest achievable nitrogen content through EAF steelmaking under atmospheric conditions is around 50 ppm. Further reduction requires vacuum treatment of the steel. This paper investigates how nitrogen control can be achieved in EAF steelmaking through charge mix and controlled process conditions in a scrap-based EAF plant.
