Scrap Sorting by Merging the Latest Technologies in Vision Systems and AI Algorithms
Steel scrap is a key material in the ongoing green transition of the steel industry, requiring less energy-intensive processes for its supply and reducing gas emissions when melted in electric arc furnaces compared to blast furnace methods of producing steel. The consequent growth in scrap demand has a direct impact on the quality of the available scrap, bringing a greater incentive for scrap processors to collect and sort the material more efficiently than before. The scope of this paper is to present an innovative method of sorting scrap, by merging the latest technologies in vision systems and artificial intelligence algorithms.
