Substitution of Foaming Coal for Decarburization of Electric Steel Production
The electric steel process is the preferred solution on the path to a carbon-neutral steel industry. This technology already has a low carbon footprint and can be combined with hydrogen-reduced iron. However, the electric arc furnace cannot operate without carbon. In addition to graphite electrodes, pulverized coal is used to foam the slag that covers the arc, ensuring high efficiency and productivity. This innovative approach uses various waste sources containing, e.g., biomass and plastics as alternative foaming agents, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The selection of substitutes is based on several criteria, including economic, technical and logistical considerations.
