Active Power Feeder: The New Medium-Voltage Power Supply Solution With Huge Benefits in Power Quality and Electric Arc Furnace Regulation

The Primetals Technologies Active Power Feeder utilizes an AC frequency converter system combined with the Primetals Melt Expert furnace control system. By incorporating a modular multi-level converter, it is able to control the furnace currents and the output frequency and voltage and moreover draw balanced active power from the supplying medium-voltage grid in a very network-friendly way. Setpoints for furnace current, frequency and arc voltage are automatically adjusted according to the operational situation and stability of arcing. The first installation of an Active Power Feeder will take place at an EAF with 50 mt tapping weight.
