The Chinese Approach to Decarburization Using Hydrogen-Rich Makeup Gas in Direct Reduction Plants
The urgent need to decarbonize the Chinese steel industry imposes to migrate from carbon-based production to hydrogen-based steelmaking. Both governmental institutions and private investors have chosen direct reduction to achieve this transition. The key points to enhance a decarburized-driven transition are:
• Flexible hydrogen composition in makeup gas and process gas.
• Selective CO2 removal process scheme.
• High-grade DRI quality, ensuring a carbon content higher that fits the steelmaking needs.
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate, through actual data of hydrogen-ased DRI plants in China, the feasibility of the novel direct reduction technology for industrial production.
