Direct reduction technologies for iron have proven carbon footprint reduction for the steel industry. Refractories are indispensable in the iron and steel industry and will enable the steelmakers in their green transformation process. As the conventional iron- and steelmaking processes are transforming, so must the refractories to ensure stability and smooth functioning. From the metallurgical perspective, iron- and steelmaking processes are transforming from carbon-based metallurgy toward hydrogen metallurgy. This article presents the complete transformative refractory solutions developed and implemented, ensuring a smooth transition to hydrogen metallurgy.
