Navigate Your Way Out of the Decarburization Challenge

Steelmakers across the globe are facing an energy and decarbonization challenge. The switch to electric and hydrogen-based steelmaking in Europe brings additional challenges and requires the use of new raw materials (e.g., direct reduced iron (DR)I), operation practices and adapted secondary metallurgical processes. This is partly a journey into the unknown and must be carefully navigated for successful implementation. This paper describes a new digital solution that allows steelmakers to react to these challenges. The influence of varying scrap composition, different types and amounts of DRI, melting strategy, secondary metallurgical treatment, and alloying strategies can be easily optimized, and practical examples are presented.
