Impact of Direct Reduced and Blast Furnace Grade Pellet Feedstock to Direct Reduced Iron Plant
Cleveland-Cliffs' hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant in Toledo, Ohio, USA, was built with the goal of using a singular direct reduction (DR)-grade pellet feedstock for production of low-silica HBI for electric arc furnace customers. With the growth of Cliffs as a company, HBI has been utilized across the iron- and steelmaking facilities to reduce carbon footprint and increase throughput. Due to the change in downstream customers, the sole use of DR-grade feedstock is no longer necessary. This paper will provide an evaluation of differing pellet feed grades on key plant operating parameters and product quality in a Midrex furnace and subsequent briquetting system.
