A Proposed Linked Oxidation-Direct Reduction Process with Hydrogen
As the global drive for decarbonization pressures the iron- and steelmaking industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, direct reduced iron (DRI) has become an increasingly attractive option for the production of high-quality iron units. However, the disintegration of DRI during transport and handling is a considerable source of lost revenue and product. Therefore, the characterization of the defect structures of DRI produced in varying gas-based reduction atmospheres and their effect on pellet strength is crucial to develop measures to reduce loss and waste. This work compares the cracking of DRI produced with different gas atmospheres.
