Use of Green Pig Iron in the Electric Arc Furnace

With the demands for energy efficiency, environment and flexibility for steelmaking operations, there are significant developments in process route with respect to the selection of charge materials. Green pig iron is the name used to identify pig iron produced with charcoal from renewable forests. The usage of green pig iron is growing due to the amount of CO2 captured by the forest to compensate for the amount of CO2 emitted, at the same time increasing productivity, giving flexibility to the charge composition, replacing electrical into chemical energy, and diluting residual elements present in the scrap charge.
