Hot Rolling Roughing and Finishing Reduction Balance for Heavy-Gauge X80
High-strength line pipe (X80) with good low-temperature toughness and heavy wall thickness (≥19 mm) requires optimization of alloying and thermomechanical-controlled process schedules. Given limited total reduction available, a balance is needed between roughing and finishing reductions applied. Here, production cast X80 steel was rolled at a pilot scale to an equivalent 19.1-mm-gauge plate using two schedules varying in transfer bar thickness. Properties were assessed with tensile and drop weight tear tests. Characterization was performed using nital and LePera etching along with optical and scanning electron microscopy.
