EAF Revamp at Gerdau Monroe: A Case Study of EAF Capacity Increase and Its Impact on the Overall Meltshop Operation

The electric arc furnace (EAF) revamp at Gerdau Special Steel North America Monroe Mill brought relief to the major capacity constraint at the meltshop. Training, standardization and commissioning are commonplace challenges for any new EAF start-up. At Monroe, however, the main challenge has been to change the operational philosophy for the whole meltshop and support areas in order for the projected benefits to be fully realized.
