Using Electrode Consumption Reduction Technology to Advance ESG Initiatives
Advancements in electrode consumption reduction (ECR) technology has provided a pathway to lower spending, increase throughput capacity and reduce carbon footprint for steel manufacturers. The ECR technology utilizes existing meltshop infrastructure with a novel chemical application approach to reduce electrode oxidation during the melting process. The ECR program establishes a protective antioxidant barrier on the electrode surface, providing a 10.3% average reduction in electrode consumption. The technology is currently in service at many major producers. This presentation outlines ECR program results, general application strategies, and future considerations for reduction of electrode oxidation and greenhouse gas production.
