Extreme Low-Contrast Detection of Periodic Roll Marks – Results and Benefits
Roll marks are a big issue for steel strip producers. They are usually induced by a defective work roll of rolling or temper mills. These periodic defects have a very low visual footprint so that they are not detectable by normal inspection systems nor by a human inspector. A recent approach for detection of extreme low-contrast periodic defects lies in increasing the defect signal contrast by overlaying images of numerous roll revolutions. Daily use benefits and inspection results of an inspection system using this kind of detection approach will be shown.
