Confocal Technology: The Next Generation in Optical Thickness Gauging

Optical thickness measurement with high precision is still a challenge in the rolling of flat metals. Especially in cold rolling mills, the requirements in terms of accuracy and long-term stability are quite tough. The confocal chromatic technology, where the spectrum of white light is used to perform a displacement measurement, shows significant advantages in comparison with laser triangulation regarding that application. Higher resolution and bigger standoff are only two of them. Together with accompanying measures in terms of stability and robustness of the overall system, the confocal technology enables a further performance step in optical thickness measurement.
