Integrated Production Cost and Carbon Emissions Optimization for Stainless Steelmaking Operation
A recent study showed production costs of certain stainless steel grades could vary significantly. It was attributed to multiple factors such as raw material selection, charging practice and operation conditions. This paper presents an integrated cost and emissions optimization solution for a stainless steel meltshop. It aims to minimize overall production cost related to raw material procurement, utilities consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, while respecting metallurgical mass and energy balance, raw material market availability, steel quality specifications, and other site-specific process and logistical constraints. The cost savings and other benefits such as carbon footprint visibility will be demonstrated through several case studies.
