Pushing Scrap Rate in BOF Operations
Increasing the scrap rate in basic oxygen furnace operation is an efficient and ready-to-be-implemented solution to reduce the CO2 emissions from steel production. Several proven tools such as process optimization, scrap pre-heating lances or dual-flow post-combustion lances can be employed. A combination of these tools allows the scrap rate to be pushed to values as high as 25% without compromising the yield. In this paper, solutions for scrap rate increase will be presented and compared and first results from studies and implementation shown. In addition, solutions for scrap preparation to ensure consistent scrap quality will be shown.
