Heat Transfer in a BOF Converter
Oxygen steelmaking is an energy-intensive process and recent research at Swinburne University of Technology has been concentrating on understanding how heat flows in the converter change during the blowing period. The study focuses on developing mathematical models to analyze (a) overall mass and energy flow, (b) droplet heat transfer, and (c) heat transfer between different zones inside the converter. This paper provides an overview and highlights the results of the heat transfer study in a basic oxygen furnace. Moreover, the present study demonstrates how different operating parameters can play a vital role in the energy optimization of the process.
