Challenges and Opportunities of BOF/LD Steelmaking Technologies Within the Green Transition
It is commonly accepted that the steel demand of the future still depends on iron-ore based processing and production technologies for superior properties and surface qualities. The basic oxygen furnace/LD process is capable of contributing to these requirements, especially in its ability to provide the lowest content levels of phosphor and nitrogen as main advantages compared to alternative process technologies. These advantages are included in climate-neutral production concepts. This paper explains the reasoning behind such concepts and presents insights based on developed metallurgical process simulations on how adopted raw material concepts impact the refining and determine the final nitrogen content at tap.
